A lawyer for Victoria's suspended police chief says she was taken aback by a statement from B-C's Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner about her client.

The commissioner says two retired judges have found enough evidence for eight of 11 allegations against Frank Elsner to proceed to disciplinary hearings.

The allegations include inappropriate behaviour toward female staff and breach of trust.

Elsner's lawyer Janet Winteringham says she was surprised that a statement was issued at this stage, since this part of the process is supposed to be confidential. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Grizzly-Attack)

The province's Conservation Officer Service says it's not yet known what caused a grizzly bear to attack and maul a forest worker on B-C's central coast.

Sergeant Scott Norris says the man's injuries after yesterday's attack are significant.

Norris says the man was on a crew working in steep forest terrain near Drainey Inlet, about 400 kilometres northwest of Vancouver.

He says March and April are when bears typically emerge from their dens after a winter of hibernation but adds that bears don't usually see humans as prey. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Pipeline-Agreements)

The province says it has spent 13 million dollars so far on 44 agreements with First Nations communities along proposed natural gas pipeline routes in northern B-C.

The government says another 20 natural gas pipeline benefits agreements are signed with First Nations but are not yet in effect.

The Ministry of Aboriginal Relations announced today it completed benefit agreements with 90 per cent of the eligible First Nations and says the contracts support environmentally and socially responsible natural gas development that respect aboriginal rights.

The four proposed pipelines linking the gas fields to the northern coast are Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline, the Coastal GasLink Pipeline Project, the Westcoast Connector Gas Transmission Project and the Pacific Trail Pipeline Project. …
