CRANBROOK. x-13s. A B-C skier who survived a powerful avalanche in the province's backcountry says everyone must remain aware of their surroundings at all times. Twenty-five-year-old Caleb Brown and skiing partner Peter Basaraba were in southeastern B-C earlier this month. Brown and Basaraba both have training in avalanche preparedness, but Brown says they ignored several danger signs, until the snow suddenly fractured under his feet and he was engulfed.

TAG: Only Brown was caught in the avalanche, which he says hurled him more than a kilometre down the mountain before the snow stopped moving and miraculously, he was not buried -- although he suffered a torn knee ligament.
