WINNIPEG - A Manitoba man who admitted to fatally beating his girlfriend after a night of drinking has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

William Ray Everett pleaded guilty yesterday to manslaughter in the death of Selena Rose Keeper.

The 20-year-old accused had originally been charged with second-degree murder.

Court heard the 20-year-old woman suffered two brutal assaults and died in hospital after she was found seriously injured in a yard in October 2015.

Keeper had filed a protection order against Everett the year before her death, alleging he had gang ties, had access to weapons and that she was afraid of him.

The woman said she was choked, punched, slapped and kicked several times during a two-year period that included a pregnancy, but her application was rejected one day after it was filed. …
