Longtime Mooney Coach Gates Steps Down | He Will Concentrate on His New Job as Assistant Principal

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL

SARASOTA -- One of the longest-tenured boys basketball coaches in the area has stepped down.

After 11 seasons as coach at Cardinal Mooney High, Stefan Gates will concentrate on his newly appointed position as assistant principal at the school.

"He was wearing lots of hats," Cougars director of athletics Bill Donivan said.

Gates informed the players Tuesday afternoon.

"It was a great run," said Gates, citing the bonds between the players, coaches and administration.

After being an assistant at DeSoto County High, Gates took a year off before replacing Joe Porter.

"He had a great run with the kids," Donivan said. "He did a great job of organizing the program and had some real successful years. We'll miss him."

The Cougars reached the regional final in 2013 for the first time in program history, losing at Community School of Naples. …
