Police Warn of Spice 'Chaos' in City Centre

POLICE issued an urgent Spice warning after 11 people collapsed in just eight hours across Manchester city centre.

Officers were called to a string of casualties on Thursday in Piccadilly Gardens, Shudehill, Albert Square and the Northern Quarter.

They had all suspectedly taken the synthetic cannabis, which has seen a huge increase in use across Manchester and the wider country in recent months.

During one incident on Thursday, two youths had fallen unconscious on Tib Street, while at Piccadilly Plaza two men were found collapsed and covered in vomit.

Another man was also found 'catatonic' in Piccadilly Gardens and local office workers alerted the emergency services.

GMP teams also detained two suspected Spice dealers on Thursday, making a total of 43 arrests as part of Operation Mandera in the last two weeks alone.

Insp Phil Spurgeon, of GMP's City Centre team, said: "We are working hard with our partners to reduce the harm Spice is causing in the city centre.

"It is extremely worrying, however, that we have had two occasions in the last few weeks where we've seen multiple collapses in a fairly short space of time. …
