Surgeon at Hospital Warns 'Lives Are Being Put at Risk'

A SURGEON has launched an extraordinary attack on his own hospital - warning that lives are at risk due to a huge demand for surgery.

Basem Khalil, paediatric surgeon at the MRI, claimed there was a top-down focus at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital on bringing down waiting lists for planned or elective surgery rather than treating emergency patients.

He told the BBC: "One of the consultant surgeons had offered to clear his elective lists with elective patients on it so he could do Kayden as an emergency, but did not receive the support he needed."

That doctor, he believed, felt he did not have the authority to change his planned surgery to accommodate Kayden.

He claims safety had been compromised.

"The hospital did not take any substantive actions with regards to the warnings that were given by myself or my colleagues," Mr Khalil added. …
