Two 13-Year-Olds in Custody after Headstones on 139 Graves Are Damaged in Pacific Cemeteries

A police officer driving through a cemetery in Pacific found more than 100 headstones damaged or destroyed, authorities said.

Two 13-year-olds were quickly taken into custody, Police Chief Matt Mansell said Friday. The damage was found just before 9 a.m. Thursday at the Pacific Cemetery and the Sunset Cemetery, which are across the street from one another north of Interstate 44. Some of the headstones date to the early 1800s, Mansell said.

The case was wrapped up about two hours after the damage was found, Mansell said, as officers canvassed the neighborhood. Police said there had been a house party in the area on Wednesday night, and some witnesses saw two teens walking toward the cemeteries.

As for why the teenagers had damaged the headstones, Mansell said they were not talking. …
