Natural Rights Are Part of the Fabric of Our Nation

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." This most famous phrase from our Declaration of Independence is a statement of natural rights, or as letter writer William Oman called it "natural law" ("Judge Gorsuch's Natural Law Views Should Be a Concern," March 28).

Also, our former VicePresident Joseph Biden, a Democrat, publicly stated on Oct. 6, 1987 (Robert Bork's Supreme Court confirmation hearing) that he was a believer in natural rights.

I am not for or against Judge Neil Gorsuch's nomination to the Supreme Court, as I do not know his understanding of natural rights. However, it is not accurate to say they are "inherently paradoxical. …
