Clubs to Vote on Salary Cap Rise

AN HISTORIC meeting of the Super League clubs is taking place in Salford today and it could have a significant bearing on the future of the sport.

The 12 sides will be presented with the opportunity to vote for an increase in the salary cap when representatives meet with Super League executive director Roger Draper at MEDIACITYUK.

It is thought the proposals on the agenda today include plans to increase the current restriction on player spending - which stands at Pounds 1.85m - and the introduction of additional exemptions, such as potentially increasing the number of marquee players each club is allowed or allowing players signed from rugby union to have part of their salary not count against the overall cap.

The movement to bring in the marquee player ruling was spearheaded by Salford Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash and he has expressed a desire to see Super League sides allowed to designate two such players. …
