KITIMAT. x-18s. A new pole will soon be raised in Kitimat's Centennial Park, replacing an aging pole that members of the Haisla First Nation say was not carved according to their customs. One Haisla master carver says "everything about it is wrong," including its uphill direction, facing away from the ocean. But Simon Fraser University anthropologist George MacDonald says the old pole will still have considerable value when it is retired, in part because its original carver, Doug Cranmer, went on to become a well-known indigenous artist.
