ST. LOUIS > Security cameras coming to south St. Louis * Six south St. Louis wards will get a total of 36 new security cameras after Alderman Kenneth Ortmann committed just under $437,000 in capital funds for the project. Beginning in May, 20 security cameras and 16 cameras able to recognize license plates will be installed .

Every camera will be tied into the police department's Real Time Crime Center. The surveillance center is staffed by detectives 24 hours a day.

The cameras will be installed at high-traffic intersections on several streets including Jefferson Avenue, South Broadway and Cherokee Street in the Benton Park, Benton Park West, Marine Villa, Mount Pleasant, Soulard and Gravois Park neighborhoods.

Ortmann was unseated in the March 7 primary when challenger Dan Guenther picked up 64 percent of the vote. (Nassim Benchaabane)
