O'Fallon and Hillsboro Share the Thrill of Playing in Busch Stadium

O'Fallon High senior Justin Dye felt his back foot get stuck on the mound during his follow through.

He kind of kicked some dirt around, but it wasn't in frustration.

Dye couldn't get upset because he was throwing on the same mound that St. Louis Cardinals' starting pitcher Michael Wacha used only hours before him.

Thoughts of Wacha and past Cardinals greats crossed his mind as he pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief during the Panthers 17-4 win over Hillsboro on Saturday at Busch Stadium.

"It's a fun atmosphere playing at Busch," Dye said. "It's a lifetime experience and I'll never forget that these are some of the greatest memories of my life."

The outcome of the game took a back seat for both teams as the players enjoying running around on the same field as some of their childhood heroes.

"It's all about the kids and this is just an awesome thing that we get to do," Hillsboro coach Kevin Lucas said. "We've been able to do it now for 10 or 15 years. It's pretty special for these kids."

O'Fallon coach Jason Portz made sure that everyone on the roster varsity and JV got a chance to take the field on Saturday knowing that these are memories that his players will never forget.

"We're going to get guys as many opportunities as possible and what's most important is the seniors come out and they're able to make memories and remember when they played at Busch," Portz said. …
