ROCHDALE came close to stunning Middle 8s hopefuls Batley Bulldogs, but could not prevent a late fightback from the home side and eventually lost 38-36.

Rob Massam scored early for the Hornets, before Warrington Wolves pair Harvey Livett and Benjamin Jullien - who featured on dual-registration - extended the visitors' lead.

Ex-Swinton centre Macauley Hallett cut the deficit, but only temporarily, with Lewis Galbraith scoring soon after. Jono Smith was then sent to the sin-bin and the home side capitalised with a quickfire double from Sam Smeaton and Hallett to cut Hornets' half-time lead to 10 points.

Matty Hadden and Johnson scored early second-half tries for Hornets, plus a Livett penalty, pushed them out to 36 points. But Batley finished much the stronger, touching down five times in the final 20 minutes, with Dom Brambani adding a conversion. …
