Times Have Changed, and City School Police Should Be Armed

As a retired Pittsburgh schools police officer, I appreciated your March 24 editorial advocating for the arming of these officers ("Arm the Officers: City School Police Should Be Able to Carry Guns"). As gun violence increases in our region, sadly reflected in a recent fatal shooting outside Linton Middle School in Penn Hills, it's critical we separate ideology from reality.

In November 2013, three students were shot outside Brashear High School; in October 2014, a University Prep student was fatally shot on his way to school; in September 2016, a Perry Traditional Academy student was shot near the school.

Pittsburgh schools police responded to these calls without weapons to protect themselves or the students. These brave men and women are called to serve and protect in the most threatening and violent of situations.

District 5 school board candidate Ghadah Makoshi noted that arming the school police "condones the inevitability that a child will be shot. …
