I found your letter today, tucked in the back of a book

of poems by Szymborska. I'd lent the book to a friend

and I didn't notice the letter until she returned it to me.

My memory fails me and I can't remember if you sent

the book to me or if I'd put your letter in there because

we had talked about Szymborska's poems, specifically

her love poems. Your letter begins, "My Dear One."

and ends, "Fondly," signed with my pet name for you.

I know that it's not the only letter you ever sent to me,

though I don't know where I've stashed the other ones.

It seems like a pretty typical letter from you though-

full of poetry, gratitude, and a little hint of Christianity.

You recommend the music of someone I know I would

never want to listen to. You also say, "I do hope to meet

up with you again come fall. …
