NAT047 - (Transcontinental-Atlantic-Canada) OTTAWA. x-20s. Canada's oldest independent newspaper has bought the newspaper and publishing assets of Transcontinental Media in Atlantic Canada. The Halifax Chronicle Herald says a new company -- called SaltWire Network -- will comprise 27 Transcontinental newspapers and the novanewsnow-dot-com website and the Herald's own publications. C-W-A Canada president Martin O'Hanlon noted the Herald has repeatedly said during bargaining that it is cash-strapped and that the operation was not sustainable with the newsroom's costs.
