NAT001 - (BC-Overdose-Emergency) VANCOUVER. x-13s. British Columbia's public-health emergency continues, a year after it was declared to highlight an unprecedented number of overdose deaths. A total of 922 people died of overdoses in the province last year, despite numerous measures to stem the problem. Nurse and clinical director Cheyenne (SHY'-ann) Johnson of the Centre on Substance Use says family doctors are the frontline for halting overdose deaths, and the centre is training them to screen and diagnose patients struggling with addiction.
