Three homers power MU over Auburn

The Missouri softball team won its series opener at No. 7 Auburn 6-1. Kirsten Mack hit two solo home runs for Mizzou (24-16, 5-7 SEC) and Braxton Burnside added a two-run homer in the seventh to support starter Cheyenne Baxter (12-4), who allowed one run on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. Auburn, the No. 2 team in the NCAA's RPI rankings, fell to 34-7 and 8-5 in SEC play. (Dave Matter)

Mizzou baseball falls to Kentucky * The Missouri baseball team's rally came too late against the SEC's best hitting team in a 5-2 loss to No. 10 Kentucky at Taylor Stadium. Mizzou's defense didn't help starter Tanner Houck, who gave up all five runs in eight innings. Three were unearned because of errors in the fifth and sixth innings. Houck (3-5) struck out seven. The Tigers (25-10, 6-7) scored their only runs in the ninth on solo home runs by Trey Harris and Brett Bond. The Wildcats (24-11, 9-4) won behind a strong start from Sean Hjelle (5-2), who threw seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. (Dave Matter)

Miller paces SLU baseball * Miller Hogan threw six scoreless innings to lead St. Louis University to an 8-1 win over UMass in Amherst, Mass. Hogan struck out four and allowed five hits and no runs. Trent Leimkuehler hit his 15th double for the Billikens (21-10, 5-4 Atlantic 10), who will go for the series sweep at 11 a.m. Saturday. (Staff report)

STLFC in Cincinnati * St. Louis FC, off to a 3-0-1 start and sitting atop the United Soccer League's Eastern Conference standings, will look to continue its strong start Saturday in a road match at FC Cincinnati (1-2). The 6 p.m. match will be the first of 10 televised by KPLR (Channel 11).

STLFC features two of the USL's scoring leaders in Christian Volesky (three goals, one assist) and Jose Angulo (two goals, one assist). Volesky, a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville product, has scored in three straight, while former USL MVP Angulo has goals in STLFC's last two victories. …
