1861 The Virginia State Convention voted to secede from the Union.

1939 The newly proposed metropolitan plan of government, seeking to establish Pittsburgh as the nation's fifth city in size with a population of 1.7 million, was defeated at Harrisburg when it failed to receive the backing of Allegheny County senators, Democrats and Republicans alike.

1957 Ground was broken for construction of the $17 million Fort Pitt Tunnels under Duquesne Heights, to provide the final link between the eastern and western sections of the Penn-Lincoln Parkway.

1986 Pittsburgh Press reporters Mary Pat Flaherty and Andrew Schneider won the Pulitzer Prize for their series, "The Challenge of a Miracle: Selling the Gift," in which they investigated the organ transplantation program. …
