Church Volunteers Help Inmates Celebrate Easter at County Jail 15 Different Services Offered for Holiday

Fourteen men in red jumpsuits sat in plastic chairs labeled "chapel" with a black marking pen while volunteers from Ethnan Temple Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Wilkinsburg led Easter services Sunday morning inside the Allegheny County Jail.

The men sat, clapped and murmured "amens" as the volunteers spoke, read from the Bible and prayed.

Then a woman up front asked for testimony, and one man stood up.

"I thank the Lord because I'm a fighter," he said. "Without him, I might not be mentally strong. I just want to thank the Lord."

He sat down amid scattered applause, and another man rose. He asked for a prayer for one of the jail correctional officers.

"He had a heart attack this week, and he was set to retire in July, and he's a good guy," the inmate said.

Others around the room nodded. The group paused to pray. …
