Man Found Dead in Madison Fell from Car That Had Fled Police, Authorities Say

MADISON COUNTY * A man found fatally injured in Madison last week fell out of a car after the driver fled a traffic stop in Brooklyn, police say.

Authorities on Monday charged the alleged driver, Terrance Smith, with reckless homicide, aggravated fleeing, attempting to elude a police officer and driving while his license was revoked. Madison County Judge Jennifer Hightower set Smith's bail at $200,000.

Police say Nicholas Roberts, 27, of Madison, was found unconscious along Big Bend Road in Madison at about 5:15 a.m. on April 9. He was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were fatal, the Major Case Squad said. He was taken off life support Friday.

Police say Roberts, 27, of Madison, was with Smith, 24, of Cahokia, early on April 9 at a nightclub in Brooklyn. Surveillance footage showed the men leaving the club together around 4:25 a.m.

A Brooklyn police officer stopped Smith's car at 4:27 a.m. on Canal Street, between Eighth and Cornell, for traffic-related offenses, according to a Major Case Squad press release. …
