1926 APRIL 21: The actual birthday of Queen Elizabeth II (born 91 years ago). Her official birthday is usually on the second Saturday June. Sovereigns' official celebrations have often been held in summer, so that there's greater likelihood of good weather for Trooping the Colour.

1941 APRIL: Prime Minister Winston Churchill sits on the back of an open car on his surprise visit to Manchester during the Second World War. There had been devastatingly heavy bombing of Manchester and Salford the previous December - the Manchester Blitz. In March 1941, the Old Trafford football stadium stands and pitch were hit by a bomb meant for the industrial area of Trafford Park.
