Poverty in the Suburbs to Be Focus of Program

A program on Wednesday will aim to educate the public about suburban poverty in South Hills communities.

"Even in a town as blessed as Mt. Lebanon, there are people who are struggling to get by," said state Rep. Dan Miller, D-Mt. Lebanon, who will host the event with Ken Regal, executive director of anti-hunger advocacy organization Just Harvest, and James Guffey, executive director of South Hills Interfaith Movement, or SHIM.

SHIM, which serves suburban communities, runs three food pantries and a "community closet" that offers free clothing.

It also provides utility assistance, employment support and programming for immigrants and refugees. The organization served 4,000 people last year.

A 2014 examination of poverty in Allegheny County found a number of pockets of need outside of the city of Pittsburgh, consistent with national trends that have seen increases in poverty in suburban areas. …
