(BC-Cyclist-Deaths-Sentencing)

A cousin of one of the cyclists killed by a drunk driver on a highway north of Whistler says the family is disappointed by the sentence handed down today.

Samuel Alec was given eight years and four months in prison and a 15-year driving ban after pleading guilty to three counts of impaired driving causing death.

The court heard Alec had been binge-drinking before he mowed down cyclists Ross Chafe and Kelly Blunden in May of 2015, while his friend Paul Pierre -- who was in the passenger seat of the vehicle -- was also killed.

Chafe's cousin John Rufh (RUF) says the sentence isn't right, adding that with time served Alec will be out in six years, while the families of his victims face a lifetime of pain. (The Canadian Press)

Clark said she expects Ottawa will act to keep U-S coal from reaching China in accordance with its climate-change agenda.

The U-S has imposed duties on softwood lumber exports from Canada and Clark says the province could turn around and put a heavy tax on coal shipments. (The Canadian Press)

The marchers demanded the province do more to keep workers safe on the job.

B-C Federation of Labour President Irene Lanzinger says rules are not rigorously enforced, injured workers aren't fairly compensated and employers whose negligence kills or seriously injuries workers get a slap on the wrist. …
