Pittsburgh Region Has More Jobs, Shrinking Workforce

The Pittsburgh region's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.1 percent in March, as employers added more jobs during the month and over the last year, according to the state Department of Labor and Industry's data released Tuesday.

For the third consecutive month, however, the labor force shrank from the year before - which could be a troubling sign that more people have given up looking for work in 2017.

Since March 2016, the state's report showed that 10,300 fewer people in the Pittsburgh region were considered to be in the labor force. Government surveys count people in the labor force when they are employed or when they take specific and recent actions to look for a job.

These are modest changes to the overall workforce of 1.2 million people in southwestern Pennsylvania, and economists caution drawing assumptions from just a few months of data. But the first three months of 2017 marked a dramatic shift from workforce trends seen last year. …
