A week after workers finished a $50,000 cleaning of the iconic Forest Park statue, the Apotheosis of St. Louis was vandalized with graffiti overnight Tuesday, officials said.

The concrete base of the statue was spray painted in red with the message, "BE the Light," accompanied by a doodle of the sun, facing Fine Arts Drive and the St. Louis Art Museum front entrance.

A St. Louis Police Department spokeswoman said the incident was reported just after 5 a.m. Wednesday. An investigation is ongoing, but no other details were provided.

The graffiti was removed by the St. Louis Parks Department by Wednesday afternoon.

The statue is the property of St. Louis, although it was the conservancy Forest Park Forever that raised the funds to clean the statue in April, which happens about every 20 years. …
