COLLINSVILLE * Consider DeVonte Tincher's palate spoiled.

A senior jumper and sprinter for the Edwardsville boys track and field team, Tincher is among the state's top long jumpers and was unbeaten this season.

Until Saturday.

Belleville East freshman Kenyon Johnson won the event by leaping 22 feet and one-half inch at the Collinsville Invitational at Collinsville High.

To make it an even harder pill to swallow, Tincher finished fourth when he jumped 21-7. It's the shortest leap for Tincher since his sophomore season.

"It's good to lose. It puts a little sour taste in my mouth," Tincher said. "I knew there'd be one meet where I jumped bad. I'm glad it happened today and not at state. It's just an experience that humbles you."

The defeat did not sit well with Tincher, who funneled his frustration into a sensational victory in a hot 200-meter dash. Tincher won the event in 21.98 to nip Collinsville freshman Jermarrion Stewart, the runner-up in 22.05.

Tincher didn't win the long jump, standout hurdler Travis Anderson was out with an injury and the 800 relay team botched a handoff and didn't finish its race, but Edwardsville still scrambled its way to another meet victory. Edwardsville scored 90.5 points to win the team title and was followed by East St. Louis (82.33), Cahokia (79.33) and Lyons (67).

"It wasn't our goal heading in," Edwardsville coach Chad Lakatos said. "We have many different areas that we're scoring and when you can put that many events together it just shows the depth of the team."

Senior thrower AJ Epenesa won the discus (180 feet, 4 inches) and was runner-up in the shot put (56 feet). Senior Matt Griebe won the 110 hurdles (14.85) and sophomore Max Hartmann won the 1,600 (9 minutes, 53 seconds).

East St. Louis had a strong showing despite its seniors not competing in the meet after attending their prom Friday night. …
