ANDER Herrera has played down his chances of being appointed United captain next season.

The midfielder has excelled under Jose Mourinho this season and his man-of-the-match performances against Liverpool at Anfield and in the win over Chelsea have intensified the clamour among supporters for him to inherit the armband.

Mourinho has appointed United's matchday captains based on their longevity, which has allowed Chris Smalling, Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young to lead the team out rather than Herrera or Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Carrick's contract expires in less than two months and Rooney is expected to leave United in the summer, which has prompted discussion over Herrera's chances.
