I am disappointed by the April 28 editorial "Cleaning Up PWSA:Overhauling Water Authority Cannot Be More Vital." The PG editorial board states: "Whoowns the water service is less important than the quality of the product."This statement is simply false and minimizes a critical step toward ensuring clean water for everyone: public ownership and public accountability.

The editorial board itself expressed support for public input into the restructuring process, as the public has had to put up with so many of the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority's failures. For example, some residents have had to pay increased rates for water that contains dangerous levels of lead. If the editorial board values public input and accountability, then it should also value public control of PWSA. When water systems are owned by private corporations there is less opportunity for public accountability. …
