Former United States intelligence officer Edward Snowden says U-S President Donald Trump's latest move calls into question the rule of law.

Trump has fired F-B-I director James Comey -- the man who was investigating activities in the Trump administration -- and Snowden calls that part of a trend to shift away from democratic controls over power people.

Speaking via video to three universities in Manitoba and Alberta Tuesday night, Snowden said he is seeing a creeping disrespect around the world for the public and their rights. (19)

(US-Trump-Comey)

Aides to U-S President Donald Trump are defending his decision to fire F-B-I Director James Comey, saying it was needed to restore confidence in the agency.

Counsel to the president Kellyanne Conway told C-N-N that the move is not a coverup, and had nothing to do with Russia.

Conway says Trump took the recommendation of the attorney general's office that it was time for a new face at the top of the F-B-I. (19)

Democratic Institutions Minister Karina Gould is commending the Senate for taking action in the Don Meredith case.

Gould says its important to recognize that the Senate has decided sexual misconduct is unacceptable in any work place and has taken appropriate measures to address it.

Meredith resigned from the Senate today, rather than wait to see if his colleagues would vote to expel him for his sexual relationship with a teenaged girl -- a vote that could have taken place tomorrow. (19)
