Larry Rice Won't Give Up Fight to Re-Open Homeless Shelter in Downtown St. Louis

ST. LOUIS * Homeless advocate Rev. Larry Rice said Thursday that he was continuing his effort to get his downtown shelter reopened while pursuing the possibility of a separate shelter in state-owned property.

In the meantime, he said at a rally outside City Hall with several dozen homeless people, he is pursuing other measures to ease their situation. That includes passing out about 600 bus and MetroLink tickets Thursday to allow homeless people to get to job interviews or doctor appointments or just to ride the buses or trains as a form of shelter.

"They keep getting more and more harassment by the police" for congregating outdoors, Rice said, "so they get on the bus and just ride it throughout the night, so they have a place to stay."

Rice's New Life Evangelistic Center was shuttered by the city last month after a long legal battle. …
