The President Is Selling Snake Oil as Populism

We all sometimes mistake words for deeds. We fall into cliches. This unfortunately occurs in David Shribman's column last Sunday ("The End of Politics As We Know It," May 7). While thoughtful, it stumbles into the trap in a couple of ways.

First, he accepts the "populist" label for Donald Trump. The term hardly applies here, as the president only gives lip-service to the values and needs of people who elected him. Instead, he seems intent on betraying them, stripping many of them of health care for the sake of tax breaks for the wealthy. That's not a populist -it's a snake-oil salesman. No promise left unbroken.

Mr. Shribman oddly implies that Democrats are in charge, and "bragging" about getting some of their priorities into the budget. They control neither house of Congress nor the White House. …
