1996 Elsie Hillman announced plans to step down from the Republican National Committee after 21 years of service.

2007 Jerry Falwell, the American pastor and conservative activist who founded Liberty University, died in Lynchburg, Va., at age 73.

2011 Jeffrey Eggleston won the Pittsburgh Marathon in his fourth professional race.
