IN Castlefield you can find the roots of Manchester: the Roman fort, canals, railway bridges, viaducts, cobbled roads, warehouses and wharves.

In the mid 20th century it became derelict and the prevailing attitude was 'fill in the murky canals, tear down the ugly warehouses and turn it into a nice car park'.

Attitudes changed and, in 1982, Castlefield was designated an Urban Heritage Park, the UK's first. …
