Cornell's wife fears painkiller played role in reported suicide

Chris Cornell's wife and the family's lawyer responded Friday to the Soundgarden singer's death after a concert Wednesday in Detroit, saying they suspect that a prescription painkiller he was taking may have contributed to what the Wayne County medical examiner called a suicide by hanging.

"Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages," attorney Kirk Pasich said in the statement.

"What happened is inexplicable, and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details," Cornell's wife, Vicky, said in the same statement.

Cornell's drug and alcohol abuse contributed to the band's demise in 1997.
