All Union needed to move into the WPIAL Class A semifinals was the right arm of junior pitcher Matt Costello.

Costello tossed his first varsity no-hitter as he walked one and struck out nine to help the Scotties (10-6) to a 7-0 victory against Rochester in the WPIAL Class 1A quarterfinals at Seneca Valley. He only threw 90 pitches.

Freshman Tyler Benedict paced the offense, going 2 for 4, knocking in two runs and scoring two others.


* Greensburg Central Catholic 1, Vincentian Academy 0: Centurions pitcher Neal McDermott stoned the powerful Royals offense, limiting them to two hits as the defending PIAA Class 1A champions (12-6) were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

* Jefferson-Morgan 7, Sewickley Academy 6: Eli Rafail went 2 for 3 and scored a run and Jake Broadwater singled, drove in two and picked up the save as the Rockets (12-5) moved two wins from their first WPIAL title.

* Jeannette 8, Eden Christian 6: Tyler Elliott had a two-run single in the top of the eighth to help the Jayhawks (13-6) into the WPIAL semifinals for the first time.


* Canon-McMillan 10, Penn-Trafford 0: Zach Rohaley picked up the win and went 2 for 3, scored twice and knocked in three runs for the Big Macs (14-5).

* North Allegheny 9, Norwin 1: Jack Lehew went 3 for 4 with two doubles and 3 RBIs, while Bobby Brown also drove in three to help the Tigers beat the Knights.

* Mt. Lebanon 6, Bethel Park 0: Mark Linkowski scattered four hits to lead the Blue Devils (14-8) into the semifinals.


* Mars 2, Moon 0: Dylan Rotz doubled, drove in a run and picked up the save to help the Planets (13-6) keep alive their quest for a first WPIAL title.

* Latrobe 4, Montour 3:Down, 3-0, in the bottom of the sixth, Zach Kokoska homered in the bottom of the sixth to start a huge comeback. Griffin Clark hit a two run double in the bottom of the seventh and Ryan Shawley capped it with a walk-off, bases-loaded walk for the Wildcats (18-2).

* Chartiers Valley 6, North Hills 3: The Indians had an early 1-0 lead, but Chartiers Valley scored its runs in the third through fifth innings.

* West Allegheny 4, Franklin Regional 1: Chasen Claus and Nick Ross had two hits apiece, and Michael Starkman, Steve Twardy and Devin Donaldson each drove in a run for the top-seeded Indians (19-1). …
