Canada claims silver at Rio beach tournament

RIO DE JANEIRO - Canada's Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan fell 2-1 to Brazil on Sunday to take silver at the Rio 4 Stars beach volleyball tournament.

Humana-Paredes of Toronto and Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., lost 14-21, 21-13, 13-15 to Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda "Duda" Santos Lisboa in their first World Tour event of the year.

"This is a great start for us as a pair and we are encouraged even more by the fact that we still have a lot of room to improve," said Pavan, who was fifth at last year's Olympics with her former partner Heather Bansley. "We hope that this will be the first of many podium finishes for us, and our sights will always be set on gold."

After Humana-Paredes and Pavan tied the third set at 13, a kill and block from Bednarczuk won Brazil the gold medal. …
