Terry Gou Is Worried by the Global Shift toward Protectionism

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Economic globalization was slowing as world economies trended toward protectionist policies, according to Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Chairman Terry Gou.

In the company's annual report, Gou said that while it remained to be seen how trends played out, economic growth was slowing despite the efforts of central banks to loosen monetary controls.

Observing that the United States had raised interest rates and was in better shape than other major economies, Gou surmised that China was moving away from the heady years of high annual growth toward more stabilize economic policies.

The eurozone was still weakened by uncertainty generated by last year's Brexit referendum and Japan was still unable to move past high inflation despite economic expansion policies, he said.

As a result of global uncertainties, Gou said, regional powers were tending to decelerate economic integration in favor of protectionist policies, including trade barriers. …
