Anti-Marriage Equality Groups Call for Referendum

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Wednesday's landmark Constitutional Court ruling paving the road to Taiwan's eventual legalization of same-sex marriage has some up in arms.

Taiwan Family ([...]), a civic group vociferously opposed to marriage equality, said Thursday it would gather signatures to propose a national referendum on the issue, rather than leave it in the hands of the "minority judicial elite."

The proposed referendum would broach two questions: "Do you support that marriage be limited to the pairing of one man with one woman?" and "Do you support the exclusion of same-sex education within the national education curriculum toward minors?"

Yu Hsin-yin, the group's convener, described yesterday's ruling as unfair and biased, and expressed confidence that the people would fight the decision to gain "ultimate victory. …
