Institutions Need to Take Action When Officials Make Threats

I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in bullying and violent behavior and was shocked that Woodland Hills principal Kevin Murray was not immediately fired and criminally charged for threatening to knock a high school student's teeth down his throat ("Crowd Protests DA's Handling of Woodland Hills Probe," May 13). Further, that he was subsequently provided with a head football coaching job at the school is not comprehensible.

A robust risk factor for future violent behavior is a history of violence, and this threat of violence and subsequent intimidation of the student are very concerning. At the very least, after an immediate suspension of his teaching license, Mr. Murray should be compelled to submit to a risk evaluation, to assess future risk of violent behaviors, in addition to long-term treatment focusing upon anger management, prior to any unsupervised contact with students. …
