Scouting report * The Cardinals continue their road trip out west this weekend with a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. Cardinals starting pitching continues to dominate, as the rotation ranks second in the major leagues entering Thursday with a 3.44 ERA.

With that pitching surge has come an offensive slump, however. Center fielder Dexter Fowler, in his first season since signing an $82.5 million contract, has struggled in the leadoff spot with his batting average hovering around .200 all season. First baseman Matt Carpenter has also seen his bat quiet down lately, as Carpenter has just four hits in his last 30 at-bats entering Thursday.

The Rockies meanwhile have been one of the more surprising teams in all of baseball, sitting atop the NL West as the only NL team with more than 30 wins. Much of that success has come with a revamped pitching staff, anchored by two rookies who will both face the Cardinals this weekend Antonio Senzatela and Kyle Freeland. …
