O'FALLON, Mo. * City Hall remained closed Friday and will be closed through the weekend as crews assess damage from a water main rupture a day earlier below the main lobby.

City spokesman Tom Drabelle said a 6-inch water main believed to have been installed in the 1930s ruptured about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, spewing water throughout much of the first floor of City Hall. Cleanup crews and some city staff have been sopping up the mess.

Water flowed from the broken pipe for 20 to 30 minutes before it could be shut off, Drabelle said. City employees were sent home about noon and the O'Fallon City Council held its Thursday night meeting at the Renaud Spirit Center.

The break prompted a shutdown of electricity and phone, TV and email service at City Hall, though the 911 center remained open for emergencies. …
