UNITED'S long search for a new Under-23 manager is close to being over.

The Reds have been without a permanent boss of the reserves since Warren Joyce quit back in November to join Wigan as manager.

United installed former midfielder and current Academy director Nicky Butt as the interim man in charge.

However, United's hunt for the right man has been so long and detailed that Butt saw out the season in charge of the youngsters.

The Under-23s campaign ended on a high with Josh Harrop's hat-trick against Spurs at Old Trafford in a 3-2 win, but the league season had seen United's youngsters struggle.

They ended in sixth place, 22 points off champions Everton and only four points shy of being relegated.

The squad did, however, provide substantial back up for Jose Mourinho's seniors with Axel Tuanzebe, Demetri Mitchell, Scott McTominay and Joel Pereira all featuring late in the season. …
