JON Kays has announced his retirement following his defeat to Andy Townend on Saturday.

The Ashton boxer suffered a second round stoppage loss in the fight for the Commonwealth super-featherweight.

It came on the undercard of Kell Brook's world title bout with Errol Spence Jnr at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, and Kays feels the time is now right to hang up the gloves.

"It's been a long journey of 24 years. I wouldn't change it for the world, I thank everyone for their help and support," he said.

"Most of all Darren McCarrick for shaping my life and being a massive influence on me as a person, I love him to bits.

"It's now time for me to experience the other side of the ropes and for me and Darren to create champions. …
