CALGARY - A jury has convicted a man accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and robbing a Calgary woman more than 20 years ago.

The verdict was returned last evening in the case of Wayne Bernard, who will face a sentencing hearing at a later date.

His victim, who was 51 at the time of the 1995 attack, died of cancer about 10 years ago without ever knowing that her attacker had been caught.

Her children cried in court when the verdict was announced.

Crown prosecutors successfully applied to have the woman's 16-page handwritten police statement admitted as evidence at the trial.

Jurors heard that she was working overnight at a catering shop when an intruder broke in, took her keys and forced her into her own van before driving to a gravel pit on city's outskirts. …
