Shakespeare Festival St. Louis Will Stage 'Romeo and Juliet' in 2018

"Romeo and Juliet" will be the 2018 mainstage production for Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, Rick Dildine announced as "The Winter's Tale" opened Friday night in Forest Park's Shakespeare Glen.

Dildine, the festival's artistic and executive director, will direct the tragedy. It will run May 30-June 24, 2018.

In 2001, the Shakespeare festival debuted with a production of "Romeo and Juliet." This is only the second time that a play has been repeated. The festival first staged "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 2002, then again in 2016. Dildine directed that second production, which brought him a St. Louis Theater Circle Award for outstanding director of a comedy; he also directed the 2013 festival production of "Twelfth Night."

Describing "Romeo and Juliet" as "a tragedy of community," Dildine points out that adults who should protect the young lovers, including their parents, all fail to intervene. …
