We have many vexing problems and it becomes easy to make a quick judgment and go on to the next, as we have done with North Korea.

The shared opinion is that Kim Jong Un, that guy with the funny haircut, is crazed, his people living under his thumb in deprivation. On top of that, he scares the bejesus out of us with the threat of a nuclear weapon. He's got to go.

Not so fast. It's a given that a dictator needs an enemy to stay in power, but why us? We may have forgotten our shared history, but the people of North Korea have not and are frequently reminded of what happened in the early 1950s.

The U.S. Air Force, during the Korean War, practically destroyed the country, and killed, according to Gen. Curtis LeMay, head of the Strategic Air Command, 20 percent of the population. …
