TAIPEI, Taiwan - High blood sugar, smoking and high blood pressure are the three leading causes of death in the country, according to a study released Wednesday.

The research, by National Taiwan University and the Health Ministry, also found that men and women have different risk factors that result in local males having a lower life expectancy.

In 2009, some 14,900 deaths were caused by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), while 13,400 were related to smoking and 11,190 to hypertension (high blood pressure), said NTU associate professor Lin Hsien-Ho ([...]).

Among men, the top three causes of death were smoking, alcohol consumption and hyperglycemia, whereas those among women were hyperglycemia, hypertension and lack of exercise. …
