Pep's Ready to Make a Splash This Summer

Article excerpt

PEP Guardiola plans to sign five more players in his £300m City overhaul.

Goalkeeper Ederson Moraes became his second signing of the summer for £34.7m - following £43m Bernardo Silva - before the transfer window has even officially opened.

It is a statement of intent from Blues chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, who has promised Guardiola the funds to transform his squad into genuine title contenders.

Alexis Sanchez, Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Ryan Bertrand are also on Guardiola's wanted list, with the Catalan hoping to bring in a centre-back and potentially a holding midfielder.

It points to a thrilling summer for City fans - and here we consider what it tells us about Guardiola's plans.

¦ HE'S HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL Guardiola has told City's hierarchy he needs more than three years to achieve his ambitions at the Etihad - and he has targeted a host young players as part of his revolution.

After signing John Stones, Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus in his first year, he's now brought in 23-yearold Silva.

Ederson is 23 and Mendy 22. Monaco's Kylian Mbappe, at 18, is also on his radar - pointing to his determination to inject youth into a squad that had been allowed to grow old together.

He will have to stick around for a lot longer than three years to see them reach their peak.

¦ HE WON'T COMPROMISE Few fans watching City last season would have thought a nimble playmaker was a priority.

The same could be said of a striker in the form of Sanchez.

Yet Guardiola has added Silva to a group of attacking midfielders that already includes David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Sane and Raheem Sterling.

He's already struggling to find a regular place for Sergio Aguero, but still wants Sanchez and/or Mbappe.

It is clear he intends to create his vision of attacking perfection and it could be a joy to behold.

His first year in English football might not have gone to plan - but he won't be changed by the Premier League.

¦ HE WANTS THE QUADRUPLE Khaldoon wasn't joking when he said he wanted to do the clean sweep - and Guardiola may well have the squad to fight on all fronts. …
