A Halifax-area navy sailor has been jailed for three years after sexually assaulting a woman he met over Facebook.

A provincial court ruling released yesterday says Leading Seaman Paul Simpson assaulted the woman on their second date in February 2014.

Judge Theodore Tax says after some consensual activity in his bedroom, she told him she did not want him to touch her, but he ignored her.

Simpson insisted she never told him no, but acknowledged she was "visibly upset" afterwards.

Chelsie Probert was rushed to hospital where she later died of her injuries.

Halifax Regional Police ruled the death a homicide following an autopsy but have not released the cause of death.

Constable Dianne Penfound says police are not disclosing how she died as the investigation is ongoing.

Five fishermen were plucked from the ice this week after their trapped boat started taking on water.
